Time duration calculator

Work out the hours and minutes between a start and end time, across midnight or across several days, minus a break, in H:MM, decimal hours and minutes.

How to use

  1. Enter the start and end times. Add dates if the span covers more than one day.
  2. Enter unpaid break minutes if you want them removed.
  3. Read the result in H:MM, decimal and minutes, then add it to the hours calculator with one tap.

Worked example: A night shift

From 10:30 PM to 6:15 AM with no dates entered: the end is earlier than the start, so the calculator wraps to the next day. (6:15 + 24:00) − 22:30 = 7:45, or 7.75 hours, 465 minutes.

With a 30-minute break the worked time is 7:15, or 7.25 hours. Enter dates and the same times to span several days, for example a 55:45 on-call stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What if the end time is before the start time?

Without dates the span is assumed to cross midnight. With dates the calculator uses the full date-times, and a negative span shows 0.

How is decimal time computed?

Minutes divided by 60 rounded half-up to two decimals: 7:45 is 7.75, 7:20 is 7.33.

Can I include a break?

Yes, enter unpaid minutes and they are removed from the span.

What does "add to hours calculator" do?

It appends the duration as a new line to the Hours Calculator in this browser so you can total several spans.

Does it accept 24-hour time?

Yes, switch to 24h or type 2230 and 0615.

How long can the span be?

Any length when dates are set; without dates it is under 24 hours.
