How to use

  1. Enter your hours for each day of the week, or switch to a weekly total.
  2. Pick the overtime rules for your state, or set custom daily and weekly thresholds.
  3. Add your rate to see regular, overtime and double-time pay. Turn on a second rate for a weighted-average premium.

Worked example: 46 hours, federal vs California

Monday to Thursday 10 hours each and Friday 6 hours is 46 hours. Under the federal rule everything over 40 is overtime: 40 regular and 6 overtime hours. At $20.00 that is $800.00 + 6 × $30.00 = $980.00.

Under California rules each 10-hour day has 2 overtime hours, 8 in total, and the remaining 38 regular hours are under the weekly cap. Pay is 38 × $20.00 = $760.00 plus 8 × $30.00 = $240.00, $1,000.00. Daily overtime is removed first so the 40-hour test never counts those hours twice.

Frequently asked questions

What is time-and-a-half?

Overtime pay at 1.5 times the regular rate. At $20.00 an hour overtime pays $30.00.

When is double time owed?

Federal law never requires it. California requires 2x after 12 hours in a day and after 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day of a work week.

How does the calculator avoid double counting?

For each day it takes double-time hours first, then daily overtime, and only the remaining regular hours count toward the weekly threshold.

What is the Nevada rule?

Nevada pays daily overtime after 8 hours only when the rate is under 1.5 times the state minimum wage, $18.00 in 2026. Above that only the weekly rule applies.

How do two rates work?

All hours are paid at their own rate, then overtime adds 0.5 times the weighted average rate for each overtime hour, per 29 CFR 778.115.

Who is exempt from overtime?

Salaried executive, administrative, professional and some other employees who meet duty and salary tests. Check the DOL and your state rules.

Can I set my own thresholds?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter daily overtime, double time and weekly hours.
