How to use
- Type a decimal number of hours, such as 8.75 or 1.3.
- Read the hours:minutes result and the total minutes. Typing a value with a colon converts the other way.
- Paste a column of decimals to convert a whole timesheet at once.
Worked example: 8.75 and 7.999
8.75 hours is 8:45, because 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. 1.3 hours is 1:18, since 0.3 × 60 = 18.
7.999 hours rounds to 8:00, not 7:60: the minutes round to 60 and carry into the hour. That carry rule is what most spreadsheets get wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula?
Hours = whole part; minutes = round((decimal − hours) × 60). If the minutes come to 60 they carry into the next hour.
Why does 7.999 give 8:00?
Because 0.999 × 60 = 59.94, which rounds to 60 minutes, and 60 minutes is one hour.
Is 0.5 half an hour?
Yes, 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes. A common mistake is reading 8.5 as 8 hours 50 minutes.
Can I convert negative values?
Yes, the sign is kept: −1.5 becomes −1:30.
How do I go from hours:minutes to decimal?
Type the time with a colon, or use the Hours to Decimal page.
What is the minutes-to-decimal chart?
A table of every minute from 1 to 60 with its decimal value, for example 15 minutes = 0.25, 20 = 0.33, 45 = 0.75. Use the filter box to jump to a value and download it as CSV.
