Fraction simplifier

Reduce any fraction to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor and see it as a mixed number, improper fraction, decimal and percent.

How to use

  1. Type the fraction, for example 18/24 or 3 6/8.
  2. Read the simplified fraction and its mixed, decimal and percent forms.
  3. Copy the result or share the link.

Worked example: 36/48 in lowest terms

The greatest common divisor of 36 and 48 is 12. Dividing both by 12 gives 3/4.

As a decimal 3/4 = 0.75, as a percent 75%. The mixed number is the same because it is less than 1.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify a fraction?

Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 18/24: gcd is 6, so 3/4.

How is the greatest common divisor found?

By Euclid's algorithm: repeatedly replace the larger number with the remainder of dividing it by the smaller, until the remainder is zero.

What is an improper fraction?

One whose numerator is at least the denominator, like 7/4. Its mixed form is 1 3/4.

Does it simplify mixed numbers?

Yes. 3 6/8 becomes 3 3/4, shown as 15/4 improper.

What about negative fractions?

The sign is kept in front: −18/24 = −3/4.

Can the denominator be 1?

If the fraction reduces to a whole number, the result shows just that number, for example 8/4 = 2.
