Daily overtime after 8 hours and weekly overtime after 40, split without double counting.
How the formulas work
Time in and time out are real Excel times, so type 9:00 AM or 17:30 and the cell stores a fraction of a day. Hours worked for a row are =((out - in + (out < in)) * 24) - break / 60. The (out < in) test adds a full day when a shift ends after midnight, so 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM returns 8 hours instead of a negative number. Break minutes are divided by 60 before subtracting so you can type 30 rather than 0:30.
The total row uses SUM. Regular hours are =MIN(total, 40) and overtime is =MAX(0, total - 40); change the 40 in cell D4 if your state or contract uses a different weekly threshold. Regular pay multiplies regular hours by the rate in B4, overtime pay uses 1.5x, and gross pay adds the two. Every result is live, so changing one punch updates the whole sheet.
Tips
Type times with AM/PM or in 24-hour form, never as plain numbers like 900. Leave a day blank and its row counts as zero. Daily overtime rules (California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado) are not applied by the basic sheet; use the overtime timesheet or the Time Card Calculator for those.
How the overtime split works
Each day gets Regular = MIN(hours, 8) and Daily OT = MAX(0, hours - 8). The regular column is then summed and tested against the weekly cap: Weekly OT = MAX(0, SUM(regular) - 40). Total overtime is daily plus weekly, and because weekly overtime only looks at hours that were not already daily overtime, no hour is paid twice. Change the 8 in the formulas for Colorado (12) or remove daily overtime for federal-only employers.
